The Lab
Situated in Bahir Dar, in northern Ethiopia, the Amhara Region Agricultural Research Institute (ARARI) Tissue Lab is responsible for producing clean, potato seed tubers. These tubers, which are planted in the fields to start the seed production process, are in high demand by local farmers. Potatoes are subject to infection by various parasites that stunt their growth, so farmers need a continuous supply of clean, disease resistant tubers.
Ten years ago, this facility was sitting empty. Former Ethiopia Peace Corps Volunteer and agronomist Dr. Charles Higgins was instrumental in establishing this tissue lab and guiding its staff in correct methods to produce disease resistant tubers. The laboratory is now staffed by Ethiopian scientists, led by Dr. Desalegn Abebe Mekonen. It is primarily funded by the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture. The Ethiopian Sustainable Food Project has helped advance the lab’s work with financial and technical support since 2010.

About $500,000 has been donated to the project over the last 14
years. Demand for these improved potato varieties far exceeds the
supply, so the Ethiopian team is in the process of building more
capacity.
